Stokvels

Stockvel is a traditional South African savings and investment club, with the primary purpose of purchasing groceries in bulk from a wholesaler. This practice is a powerful example of “economic ubuntu in action,” where people come together to leverage their collective resources for the benefit of all members.

The basic principle is straightforward: a group of people, often friends, family, or neighbors, pool their money together on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, or annually). Instead of using this money for individual shopping trips, the collective funds are used to make a single, large-scale purchase of groceries at a wholesale retailer. The purchased goods are then divided equally among the members.
